Mannequin History
Mannequin’s were developed for dress makers, they were first used when the introduction of plate glass and electric light allowed for large window displays in the new department stores at the turn of the 19th century.
The word 'Mannequin' comes from the French word 'Mannequin', which had acquired the meaning "an artist's jointed model". This originated from the Middle Dutch word 'Mannekijn', meaning little man.
One interesting historical fact is that in that when King Tutankhamen's tomb was opened in 1922, the archeologists discovered a wooden torso not far from a clothing chest. Dating from 1350 B.C this could be actually be the first ever mannequin!
